An irrational but forever pleasurable premise for a movie is when the characters exchange places with each other or imagine to be someone else, it always ends up being uproarious and the message is most often about bearing in mind the other individual’s perspective.
Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron play father and son who trade places after an old Indian brew gets sprinkled into the dad’s bloody Mary. “Like Father, Like Son” is from 1987 and the cast includes Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron, Margaret Colin, Catherine Hicks, Patrick O’Neal and Sean Astin.
The father is a cardiovascular surgeon who happens to be so engrossed in his own vocation that he pays no consideration to the problems the son is having with school and social activities. The trading places with each other leads to bizarrely hilarious difficulties at work and at school but each gets insight into the others life.
In a comparable plot the movie “Freaky Friday” from 2003 has Jamie Lee Curtis playing a mother who trades places with Lindsay Lohan who plays her 15 years old daughter. The mom wants more support for her upcoming wedding to her fianc and the daughter wants her mom to support her musical aspirations with her rock band.
A Chinese restaurant and a mysterious fortune cookie on Thursday evening bring about a Friday to remember. But the wedding is on Saturday. Will they be switched back in time? Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan and Mark Harmon.
And next a movie about someone pretending to have a different identity, “Mrs. Doubtfire” is about a free spirited husband and father who gets a divorce from his wife after fourteen years. He cannot abide the notion of being away from his kids so he dresses up as a British nanny and his ex-wife employs him.
Sally Fields is the ex-wife, with Pierce Brosnan as her new boyfriend. Robin Williams plays the dad and Mrs. Doubtfire with Lisa Jakob, Matthew Lawrence and Mara Wilson as the children. “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a movie that everyone can enjoy from the year 1993.
And there you have three movies that are based upon the illogical but amusing idea of mistaken identities. Enjoy.
