We call it a barstool but we buy a pair to use in the kitchen at the counter or with the kitchen island. We say “barstool” when we purchase a set of stools for the new gathering table we bought for the dining room. When adding a home bar to the family room, two or three of these make it more functional as a gathering spot to entertain friends and family. Breakfast bars, dining counters and breakfast nooks are common space-saving designs in condominiums while gathering tables have become a popular way to furnish dining rooms in homes with smaller sized formal dining areas. For this reason, these have become an integral part of interior decorating for a variety of decor styles. Because stools have become so popular, the market is very competitive, with the industry offering a range of styles and designs, from swivel to adjustable to backless, for virtually every room in today’s modern home.

But not all types of seating for the bar are created equal - in height that is. While we might casually call them barstools, they stools are available in different heights designed to meet specific functional purposes.

Seat height: A counter in the kitchen, a gathering table or a counter height dining table will typically need a stool with a seat height of 24 to 26 inches. A home bar, pub table or counter that stands 40″ high requires a stool 28 to 30 inches high (as measured from the seat to the floor). A bar or counter between 45″ to 48″ high will require a spectator stool, also known as an extra tall home bar stool, that has a seat height of 33 inches.

Construction: Construction materials fall loosely in three groups: wood, metal or a combination of wood and metal. It’s an entirely personal preference, but people tend to pair wood stools with wood bars, counters, etc. However, to create visual interest, pair the metal ones with a wood bar or vice-versa.
